Perth and Kinross Women’s Festival March 2017
Perth & Kinross Women’s festival earlier this month, had a packed programme of events celebrating the achievements of women and creating more opportunities for further achievements
The ‘Be yourself group’ have organised Perth’s International Women’s Day celebrations since 1997. They promote the position and importance of women in the multi cultural society of Perth and Kinross. There were many events and exhibitions including …music, yoga, dance, classes, karate, golf health and beauty treatments, crafts.
The thing that jumped out at me was the free taster sessions being offered at Balans Pilates Studio, near Perth.
I phoned up and Alison kindly booked me in to a Pilates class and a BarreConcept class. I turned up for my pilates class and found the studio to be light and airy and warm and welcoming. I joined the Apparatus Class Level 2 … with Joakim the maestro himself. I had heard about the wizardry of this man and was slightly in awe. We worked on the reformers with towers , leads and ropes and chains and stools. what an eyeopener it was for little old me, who has only ever practised matwork. The classes are small, and Joakim’s gimlet eye misses nothing – there is nowhere to hide. I loved this class.
A couple of days later I tried BarreConcept, with Alison. Alison and I had passed our Netball Coaching Level 1 together, years ago and I had no idea that she worked at Balans now. It was lovely to see her again. The large studio has big windows and a mirrored wall and is filled with light. The BarreConcept class builds stamina and burns fat without running! Sounds good right? I didn’t know what to expect. Maybe a few balletic plies, with a bit of arm waving and leg lifting. In reality, this full body workout raises quite a sweat, while being kind to the joints. There was no aerobic leaping up and down. Not a heel dig in sight. Yet this class was tough! It focused on technique while maintaining correct alignment.
I can recommend Balans Pilates Studio. The classes are quite expensive, but the level of instruction is high and the equipment is cutting edge. Also the classes are small – there are no overcrowded halls here, so technique can be observed. The studio itself is a beautiful and safe space in which to practice.
